Etymology
From a poem by Barcroft Boake published in w:The Bulletin|The Bulletin magazine 7 May 1892 about a fictional Jimmy Wood from Britain who is determined to end the practice of shouting (buying rounds of drinks for one's group of mates).

Another possiblity is a derivation from Sydney slang Johnny Warder which meant a man who tried to cadge#Verb|cadge drinks (which in turn is from a Sydney publican John Ward).
